Recognizing Africa’s role in the global knowledge economy.

Authored by: Nagham El Houssamy and Dr. Nagla Rizk

Abstract: This Working Paper sets out findings from research exploring the growing maker movement across North Africa, focusing primarily on Egypt, but also highlighting experiences from Morocco and Tunisia. Based on data gathered through interviews with 13 management-level individuals involved in 10 different makerspaces—seven in Egypt, two in Tunisia, and one in Morocco—the authors present findings related to the operational dynamics of these makerspaces; linkages between innovation, learning and skills development; issues of innovation ownership, intellectual property (IP) appropriation, and collaboration; and the notion of innovation scalability.
