University of Johannesburg

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is Open AIR’s newest hub. It was previously located at the Institute for Economic Research on Innovation (IERI) at Tshwane University of Technology. The University of Johannesburg houses the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI), funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and administered by the National Research Foundation (NRF). Current and planned broad research focus areas under the Chair include: Structural change, Industrialisation and deindustrialisation Industrial policy, and Technology and innovation. Open AIR researchers are focusing on "Innovation and Inclusive Industrialisation", looking at: (a) innovation in micro enterprises as a route for inclusive industrialisation; (b) technological innovation in labour-absorbing industries and their impact on employment; and (c) fourth industrial revolution technologies and their prospects for
inclusion and employment. Also affiliated with IERI and the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Scientometrics and Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy (SciSTIP), researching the informal sector, science policy issues, and knowledge production in higher education.
