Dick Kawooya’s research explores the role of intellectual property in fostering innovation, particularly the impact of IPRs on knowledge exchange between formal institutions (universities, research centers, libraries) and informal African sectors. His work aligns with themes of information access and flow, emphasizing ethical and legal barriers to these processes, often viewed through the lens of libraries.
His teaching philosophy prioritizes student-centered learning and learner support, especially in online courses across platforms. His experience spans library and information science topics—including policy and ethics, foundations of services, globalization and IT intersections, information economics, and research methods—as well as global studies courses on information in economic and contextual frameworks.
