    Prof. Florian Martin-Bariteau is the University Research Chair in Technology and Society, a tenured Associate Professor of Law in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, and the Director of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa, Canada’s premier research group on technology law, ethics and policy, as well as the AI + Society Initiative. He is also a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at

    Harvard University and a member of the Nexus for Quantum Technologies Institute at the University of Ottawa.

    A technologist and creative turned legal scholar, his research focuses on technology law, ethics, and policy, with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence, blockchain technologies, quantum science and technologies, cybersecurity, whistleblowing, and intellectual property law.

    An internationally recognized thought leader in technology policy, Prof. Martin-Bariteau is engaged in shaping legal and governance frameworks that safeguard rights and liberties in the digital context and advance a more secure, inclusive, and rights-respecting society. He is the recipient of the 2019 Common Law Emerging Researcher Award and the 2024 Early Career Researcher of the Year Award for Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa. In 2025, he was elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada, recognizing him among Canada’s leading emerging voices.

    He has published in leading journals and with major academic presses in French and English, and has presented his work globally to academic and policy audiences. He regularly comments on technology-related developments in national and international media outlets. His research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada, as well as several foundations and philanthropic supporters.

    Prof. Martin-Bariteau serves as co-investigator and research group leader in multiple transdisciplinary partnerships, including three SSHRC-funded initiatives: Cyberjustice Lab’s Autonomy through Cyberjustice Technology, the Global Journalism Innovation Lab, and HC2P – Human-Centric Cybersecurity Partnership. He is also a group leader within the NSERC-funded Quantum Alliance Consortium QuORUM (QUébec Ontario consoRtium on quantUM protocols).

    He is a co-investigator of Open AIR (the Open African Innovation Research network) and a member of several international research networks. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the NCE SERENE-RISC, Canada’s smart cybersecurity network, and co-led, with Prof. Elizabeth Dubois, Connected Canada, a pan-Canadian interdisciplinary research initiative on citizenship in the digital age.

    He was appointed a Fellow (2022–2023) of the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. He has also held visiting appointments as Visiting Professor at CERCRID (UMR CNRS) and the Faculty of Law at Université Jean-Monnet Saint-Étienne (2023), at the 3IA – Interdisciplinary AI Institute at Université Côte d’Azur (2024), and at QuantAlps, the quantum institute of Université Grenoble-Alpes and CNRS (2024).
