BIOMEDICAL INNOVATION PROJECT ARCHIVE
Researchers from the Open African Innovation Research network (Open AIR) are investigating the regulatory root causes of vaccine inequity to promote inclusive, global health equity through open innovation. Building on foresight research from 2013 regarding pandemic shocks, the network champions open innovation models to address intellectual property rights and access to technologies like vaccines. Current initiatives include scoping research on “regulation for innovation” and specific studies on the local development of mRNA-based vaccines in Kenya and South Africa, led by a team including Professors de Beer, Oguamanam, Ncube, and Dr. Omino. Supported by the New Frontiers in Research Fund’s special call for post-pandemic recovery, the project also utilizes rapid response programs to bridge divergent international viewpoints on technology transfer and intellectual property within treaty negotiations.
